The athleisure revolution 5 years ago led to the emergence of new sports and performance brands. There are so many different types of leggings that it has become a “happy problem” to buy the right pair for what you need. The following guide presents specific criteria to help you narrow down your options and making the process easier and effective.
Gym Leggings
Take into consideration your goals and training style rather than on the performance of the legging. The focus should be put on fabric, style, and how it fits you. They should be made with sweat-wicking fabrics so the harder you work at the gym, the more they perform, and they should stretch and be tight.
Things to look for:
- Moisture-wicking
- Stylish
- Seamless
- Comfortable (stretch)
- Breathable
Running leggings
When it comes to running leggings, the performance takes priority, you need a product that will perform at a high level and will stay comfortable as you run. You must avoid the constant distraction of pulling your leggings up or adjusting them while focused on the finish line. Your running leggings also need to have pockets for your valuables and reflective trim for running at night.
Things to look for:
- Moisture-wicking
- Comfort
- Pockets for valuables
- Reflective trims
- High waist or reinforced waist to avoid slip down

Now, that you have the key characteristics of each type of legging according to your training style. There are two other options of leggings based on the weather and sculpting your body. Capri leggings and High waist leggings.
Capri Leggings
Cropped leggings are a type of legging that is perfect for training in warmer weather and if you want some extra exposure for comfort. They can be purchased in a lightweight fabric. Most sportswear brands will have a cropped version of their long leggings, Your Capri pants could finish mid-shin or just below the knee, so make sure you check that the length is what you are expecting.
High waisted leggings
These are my favorite type and I will suggest you take into consideration buying your leggings high waisted. They are flattering and they accentuate the curves and hold everything in place. It practically helps with your core exercises. These are a hit when practicing Barre, Pilates, and yoga. High waisted leggings are the most stylish and can be paired up with a stylish sports bra or a crop top. The only downside is that it will help you sweat more. Try it on and move in them, make sure it doesn’t go as high that you can’t move at all. They go as high as your empire waist.
There is a type of legging that fits the needs of the training of your choice. The above are just basic features to look for. Your personal style is very important, so take it into consideration color, design, and fabric trims.
